"Set in Nazi Germany during World War II, The Book Thief tells the story of nine-year-old Liesel’s journey into adolescence in terrifying times. We’ve all read copious books about WWII, and that’s a good thing, especially for travellers in Europe. The Book Thief stands out among the crowd because it takes many viewpoints, and its narrator is Death, who is doing quite well these days.

It’s young Liesel who is the Book Thief. Curiously enough, she can’t actually read when she steals her first book, but her foster father teaches her and thus begins an obsession, with reading and with stealing books to feed her need to be distracted from the horrors of war. The ability of literature to lift readers out of their lives is the main theme of this book, but there’s so much more that makes it a gripping read.

The Book Thief was published twenty years ago and made a huge impression back then; it was translated into 63 languages, sold over 17 million copies and was made into a wonderful movie. If you somehow missed out, or were too young at the time, it’s not too late! Markus Zusak’s most successful book is just as relevant now as it was then, or perhaps even more important."
