"Labyrinth is set in the Pays d’Oc, in the foothills of the French Pyrenees around the city of Carcassonne and the then-border fortress of Montsegur. It brings to life the struggles of the Cathars, worshippers who followed an older version of Christianity in the thirteenth century. Persecuted by the Catholic Church, they retreated in the face of a martial crusade to the border fortresses where they were besieged and eventually put to death.
Walking the Cathar Way, starting near Perpignan at the fortress of Queribus, trekking via Montsegur before walking out to Foix, the book animated the ghosts of these misty ruined chateaux, perched on remote, rocky crags as well the challenges of assaulting and subduing them.
A recommended read for anyone visiting this region wanting to understand its chequered history."
