The police station in the story was about two streets away from where I was staying for a few days on my own, in Bangkok. The street scenes were so real, that everyday I would come out from my hotel, and walk down the streets, clearly able to imagine where what I had read the previous evening had taken place. And yet at no point did I feel that I too might be murdered!! I was just pleased to have Harry Hole and some of the other characters' company on my trip."
