"This is a story about a failed balloon expedition from Svalbard in the Arctic Circle to the North Pole, but also about the writer's investigation into exactly what happened. The three men who went missing were inexperienced and, in some ways, the planning was laughable, but gives insight into the 'heroic' expeditions of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Their bodies were not found (on an uninhabited island) for many years and then their deaths were still unexplained. Their diaries give details of their trials after crashing the balloon and trekking over the ice in the Arctic in winter. It's a beautifully written description of the author's determination to find out what happened."
