'One of the best books I've read in my entire life. It's epic. It's transportive . . . It was unputdownable!'

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water follows a family in southern India that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning - and in Kerala, water is everywhere.
At the turn of the century a twelve-year-old girl, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this poignant beginning, the young girl and future matriarch - known as Big Ammachi - will witness unthinkable changes at home and at large over the span of her extraordinary life, full of the joys and trials of love and the struggles of hardship.
A shimmering evocation of a lost India and of the passage of time itself, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the hardships undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. Imbued with humour, deep emotion and the essence of life, it is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years.

"Beautiful description of Kerala in India. Reminded me of the boat trips I took when I went there over 15 years ago"

"A fantastic family saga covering nearly a hundred years. Set in Kerala following through 4 generations of a family. It brought to life the characters so well and the descriptions of people and places are so evocative. I felt bereft when I finished it since the characters had become so real to me.

I now want to go to Kerala!"

"This book is set mainly in the Western Ghats in the south of India. The landscape and the lives of the characters are closely linked together. The author writes beautifully about the landscape and makes it very imaginable. The story takes place over many years and the landscape themes are important to all the generations of a family and their community. It made me want to travel there."

"This is a wonderful book spanning generations of a family, set in Southern India and beginning in 1900. It follows one young girl through her life and that of her family while interweaving the lives of others whose paths then intersect. It’s tragic, sad but uplifting and joyous too. It invokes life in India from the turn of the last century and how it changes and evolves. The story revolves around medicine, art, love, terrible loss and grief and water. A wonderful read but especially to be immersed in India ( and Glasgow a bit! ) and the beauty of its people , land and culture."

"Set in south India, this book really takes the reader there. A book which spans decades and throughout the theme of water and its influence on a family is its focus. At first I was intrigued with quite how water had such an effect on this family by the end it became ingeniously obvious. I read this book in the UK but I wish I had saved it for my next trip to India."
