In this memoir, Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali.

"The ultimate book about self-discovery and finding self-love set in Italy, India and Bali, Indonesia. The main character is Elizabeth who realises after a divorce that all the men in her life have driven her life choices and interests and she embarks on an epic journey of discovery - about herself. She travels to Italy, India and Bali in an attempt to" find herself". Lots of eating in Italy reminded me of all the good meals I had eaten there many years ago as well as the fantastic sightseeing. Lots of self-reflection in an ashram in India had always given me an interest in visiting India which I have recently returned from. Although I didn't have the time for extensive reflection in an ashram, I did visit temples and could reflect upon the collective spiritualism of the Indian population. In spite of being an Australian, I had never visited Bali or Indonesia until after I read this book. Again, the book provides an insight into the incredible spiritualism of Bali and ultimately where Elizabeth, the character in question, finds self-peace and love."

"Written by a woman who is trying to find the right kind of experience and learn how to connect with herself. I think many of us can identify with the thoughts and feelings of the character as she indulges in her pleasures and learns about meditation . She travels to three countries beginning with I : Italy India and Indonesia. I followed her experiences and really felt like this was all happening to me. It was both amusing and distressing at times but always compelling. From an educational point of view not only did I learn more about how to deal with life I discovered so much more about the three countries visited. Everything felt so real. The description of food and the insights into meditation were entertaining, amusing and heartfelt. The book gave me even more of a desire to travel and explore. Truly a book I couldn't put down."
